Located south of Chapel Hill and west of Raleigh, Chatham County is easily accessible to the Triangle and surrounding area. What started as a trading route for the Catawba Indians and was later settled by Europeans in the mid-1700s, is now a flourishing community of nature-lovers, artists, and farmers.
The natural beauty and recreation of Chatham County draw many visitors. The 46,000 acres of Jordan Lake offers 14 miles of hiking and biking trails, campsites, beaches for swimming, and lots of access points for boating and fishing. Located just a few miles east of downtown Pittsboro, an escape into the wilderness is easy. Another beautiful spot is the Lower Haw River State Natural Area. Local restaurants and food artisans draw from the large community of resident farmers who make-up Chatham County. No stop in Chatham is complete without visiting Fearrington Village. This former 18th century farm is now a luxury inn with gourmet restaurants and shops. While the cows, chickens, goats, and silo that remain are a reminder of Fearrington Village’s agricultural past, the Chatham Mills Farmers’ market and annual Piedmont Farm Tour are a reminder of the agricultural future and present.
Chatham County works to support the arts and cultural needs of the area through education and organizing events featuring the vibrant arts community. Every May and October, Shakori Hills hosts four days of music and dance with 4 stages and 40 bands. Every first Sunday in April through March, Pittsboro invites the public to experience live music, food trucks, art vendors, and more. In the summer months, Bynum General Store and Post Office hosts a concert series featuring folk, blues, rockabilly, and bluegrass music. During the rest of the year, join Bynum in celebrating and holding community events like storytelling, fundraisers, and bazaars.
