February is Black History Month and a great time to be mindful about supporting black owned businesses. One of our favorite pastimes is going out and trying new restaurants, so we thought we would spotlight some of our favorite black owned restaurants in Durham. See one you haven't tried yet?

The Chicken Hut

Established in 1957 by Cliaborne Tapp Jr, and originally called the Chicken Box, Chicken Hut is the second oldest operating restaurant in Durham. Serving up delicious southern favorites such as BBQ Chicken, Meatloaf, and of course it wouldn't be complete without the sides (our favorites are the hush puppies). A tip - This is a cash only restaurant, so make sure you come prepared!

Zweli

Owned and operated by husband and wife team, Leonard and Zweli Williams, this is the only Zimbabwean restaurant in Durham, and in the United States. The love that they have for their culture shines through their cuisine. They are reopening their restaurant this week in Brightleaf square, and we cant wait! Some of their must have foods to try are their Piri Piri Chicken, Braised Oxtail, Samosas, and their Sweet Magwinyas (Think beignets). This is a wonderful way to indulge your tastebuds in something new while celebrating Black History Month.

Saltbox Seafood

Founded in 2012 by Chef Ricky Moore, Saltbox Seafood has become a local staple in Durham. Chef Moore draws inspiration from classic American fish camps and waterside seafood shacks. Their menu changes daily with local fresh offerings such as whole fish, Honey Hushpuppies, Grits and Catfish, and so much more. Each day you are bound to find something delicious and flavorful!

True Flavors Diner

Founded by Chef Sidney Covers, he opened up this stand out diner right off of Highway 55 in Durham! True Flavors Diner features upscale yet familiar diner classics that are sure to make you feel right at home! Some of our favorites are their biscuits (they are to die for), Catfish and Grits, and you can't go wrong with their chicken and waffles!

Beyu Caffe

Owner Dorian Bolden founded Beyu (pronounced “Be You”) in 2019 so everyone from all walks of life could come together and enjoy good food and great vibes. Whether you are stopping in for their signature blend (Heart & Soul), or a delicious bite to eat, this is a great casual place to try out! Their menu features everything from lattes, to omelets, to salads, to fried green tomatoes.

Whether you are looking to try a new restaurant or visit one of our spotlight businesses, we hope you take the time to explore and support some of these amazing black-owned businesses in Durham!
