As someone who helps families discover their perfect home in Chapel Hill every day, I'm constantly reminded of what makes our community so special. But this month, that "something special" is literally on display for all to see through the incredible Uproar Festival of Public Art, happening August 1 through August 23rd.

What is Uproar? Think Art Meets Adventure

Imagine a free, family-friendly art festival where 60 bold, high-impact outdoor works of art are showcased throughout the downtown communities of Chapel Hill, Carrboro, and Hillsborough. Think of Uproar as a big, artsy scavenger hunt – and that's exactly the kind of creative, engaging community experience that draws people to call Chapel Hill home.

This year's festival features artists from six southeastern states – North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Alabama, and Georgia – with 22 artists making their Uproar return. The variety is incredible: two-dimensional pieces, sculptures, and installations that transform our familiar streetscapes into an outdoor gallery.

Here's what really excites me as both a resident and real estate professional: festival organizers reviewed 140 applications this year – a 40% increase compared to the festival's inaugural year of 2023. This isn't just growth in participation; it's proof that our community is becoming an increasingly recognized destination for arts and culture.

The best part? YOU get to help choose the winner! Cash prizes totaling $21,000 will be awarded based on both public voting and a jury panel of experts, with the People's Choice Winner taking home $10,000. There's something wonderfully democratic about a community coming together to celebrate and support the arts.

As a realtor, I often get asked, "What's it really like to live in Chapel Hill?" Events like Uproar give me the perfect answer. Here's a community that:

Prioritizes Arts & Culture: The Orange County Arts Commission and its community partners have created something unique – the first festival of its kind in North Carolina. This isn't just a one-time event; it's an investment in our cultural landscape.

Values Accessibility: The festival is completely free and accessible, with no tickets required. It's the kind of place where families can spend a Saturday afternoon discovering art together without worrying about admission costs.

Supports Local Artists: Each participating artist receives a $1,000 honorarium, and they're encouraged to sell their work during the festival. This is a community that doesn't just appreciate art – it invests in artists.

What I love most about Uproar is how it showcases the collaborative spirit that defines our area. Key partners include the towns of Chapel Hill, Carrboro, and Hillsborough; the Chamber for a Greater Chapel Hill-Carrboro; the Chapel Hill Downtown Partnership; UNC-Chapel Hill; Visit Chapel Hill-Orange County; the Hillsborough Arts Council; and the Orange County Arts Alliance.

This kind of regional cooperation? It doesn't happen everywhere. It's the result of communities that value working together for the greater good – the same spirit that makes Chapel Hill such a desirable place to put down roots.

If you're considering a move to Chapel Hill, take a weekend and explore. Walk through downtown Chapel Hill, drive over to Carrboro, venture into historic Hillsborough. See the art, but also notice the walkable neighborhoods, the local businesses, the way people stop to chat with neighbors. This is what you're really investing in when you buy a home here.

Events like Uproar don't just entertain – they enhance property values and quality of life. Communities with strong arts programming consistently attract educated, engaged residents. They support local businesses. They create the kind of vibrant atmosphere that makes people want to visit, and more importantly, want to stay.

Whether you're a current resident or considering making Chapel Hill home, I encourage you to experience Uproar before it ends on August 23rd. You can find all the details, artist information, and art locations at uproarfestnc.com.

And if walking through this outdoor gallery makes you think, "I could see myself living here," well – that's where I come in.
