Enjoy a Weekend Getaway at one of North Carolina's Iconic Beaches

North Carolina is home to some of the most beautiful beaches along the Atlantic coast and, fortunately for its residents, the Triangle area is only a short drive away!  Now that the 4^th of July has come and gone, there’s no better time to beat the southern heat and spend a weekend at one of the best beaches in the state!

Carolina Beach – 2 ½ hours from Chapel Hill

Located in Wilmington, Carolina Beach is one of three incredibly popular beaches nearby this popular town.  With an abundance of restaurants, shops, and various activities throughout town, such as a popular boardwalk with amusement rides, it makes for the perfect summer destination for any family looking to be kept entertained!  Those looking to spend quality time fishing will especially enjoy the part of the beach that resides within Carolina Beach State Park.  Compared to the other two beaches in Wilmington, Carolina Beach is the most affordable, making it a popular destination for those looking to invest in a summer home.   

Emerald Isle – 3 hours from Chapel Hill

While this beach is one of the largest in North Carolina, population-wise, it’s been one of the state’s best-kept secrets for quite some time.  With all of the amenities you’d look for in a beach town, such as restaurants, shops, picturesque parks, hotels, campgrounds, and rental homes, you’ll get the best of both worlds when visiting with both the activities and the undeniable small-town hospitality. 

Kure Beach – 2 ½ hours from Chapel Hill

Located further down the coast than Carolina Beach, just outside of Wilmington, Kure Beach is the smallest of the three within that area.  Due to its size and a slightly further distance from town, this beach is more relaxed and slightly less crowded than those nearby.  So, if you’re looking for a similar Wilmington feel, with a slightly smaller crowd, consider this destination for your weekend!

Bald Head Island- 3 3/4 hours from Chapel Hill 

No cars are allowed here!  If you're seeking a restful & relaxing experience, Bald Head Island is for you.  Meander the beach on a golf cart or bike. With 14 miles of shoreline and 12,000 undeveloped acres, it is serene and peaceful.  If you're a bird watcher, this is a heavenly place to spot over 260 bird species.

Cape Hatteras-  4 1/2 hours from Chapel Hill

This is a national seashore with unspoiled beaches and an iconic black and white lighthouse. Four campgrounds are available for a true outdoor experience and are great for families.  You'll even get a glimpse of the fantastic sea turtles if you arrive during nesting season.

The Outer Banks – 3 ½ hours from Chapel Hill

The Outer Banks isn’t just one of the most popular beaches in North Carolina, but also one of the most popular vacation destinations in the country.  Fortunately for those of us who live in the Triangle, it’s the perfect distance for a long weekend!  With over 200 miles of shoreline, your family is sure to find the perfect location for you.  The area is consumed with hotels, rental homes, restaurants, shops, and even has one of the most pet-friendly beaches in the country!

Topsail Beach – 2 hours and 45 minutes from Chapel Hill

If you’re hoping to find a destination that is less crowded than the rest, Topsail just might be the best choice for you.  Largely due to the fact that most of its residents have their second homes there, instead of year-round, it’s the perfect beach destination for those hoping to simply relax and take in the scenic views.  Due to its relaxing nature, you are also more likely to experience wildlife while visiting Topsail than some of the other destinations. 

Wrightsville Beach – 2 ½ hours from Chapel Hill

Due to its close proximity to Wilmington, as well as its never-ending list of things to do, Wrightsville Beach is known to many as the most popular beach, and island, in the state.  With a wide range of community activities, scenic cruises, live music on the water, wellness activities, etc., you just might find yourself wanting a summer home here, too!
