Getting Outside!
The warm air and sunshine is calling me! Is it calling you? - It is the perfect time of year to explore the beauty of the outdoors … and with a little allergy medicine to keep the pollen fairy at bay & a bottle of H2O, it’s a great way to do something active, fun and educational & improve your mindset too! I've always felt better after a walk and scientists have found that spending just 2 hours a week outdoors can improve mental and physical health! Even better news is that it didn't really matter if it was all at once or in shorter spurts- Just doing it is what counts!
So what’s your “jam”.. Is it walking with your airpods, some favorite tunes playing in your neighborhood, or does the idea of a hike in the forest get your heart pumping?!? If you’re open to trying out some options ‘not too far away’, I’ve got some awesome local suggestions to explore!
Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area - 2.2 miles of trail right in Hillsborough!
Johnston Mill Nature Preserve - 3.5 miles of trails located in Chapel Hill
Eno River State Park - offers a variety of trails spanning 28 miles and includes a scenic suspension bridge over the river.
Bolin Creek Trail - located near the Chapel Hill Community Center enjoys views of the center’s rose garden and the greenery around the paths spanning 2.5 miles. The park, rose garden, and Community Center also offer shaded areas, picnic tables, and fun playground!

William B. Umstead State Park - listed in the top 10 of North Carolina’s State parks on the website, AllTrails features 23 trails to choose from in varying levels of difficulty and is located on the outskirts of Durham, Raleigh, & Cary.
The American Tobacco Trail - located in Durham with trails near Southpoint and connections near Woodcroft and Hope Valley Farms. Paved, accessible, and well-maintained.
If nature is more of an artistic expression for you, you may enjoy a stroll around Duke Gardens! Watch the koi fish swim around the centrally located pond and see the expansive variety of flowers and plants that adorn the many gardens. There are many places to nap on a blanket, have a picnic and read a book. They also offer classes onsite in their education building & recently had their annual plant sale! There is so much history at the gardens- We give a big green thumbs up to the Sarah P.Duke gardens.
These are just a few of the amazing local trails to get you outside. North Carolina has many incredible reserves and parks with lots right here in Chapel Hill, Durham, and Hillsborough. No matter what “getting outside” looks like for you, we hope you get a lot of enjoyment from what Mother Nature right here in the “triangle” offers each and every one of us!
