Hello friends! As a Chapel Hill realtor who's constantly exploring every nook and cranny of our beautiful Central North Carolina region, I thought I'd share my personal summer bucket list with you. Sure, everyone knows about Franklin Street and the Carolina campus, but there's so much more magic hiding in plain sight around here. Whether you're a longtime local or considering making this incredible area your home, here are some spots you simply must visit.

Face-to-Face with Majestic Big Cats in Pittsboro

I have to start with one of my absolute favorite hidden gems – Carolina Tiger Rescue in Pittsboro. There's nothing quite like looking into the eyes of a rescued tiger and knowing you're supporting an organization that's given these magnificent creatures a second chance at life. The sanctuary houses tigers, lions, cougars, bobcats, and other wild animals, all with incredible rescue stories. The guided tours are both educational and deeply moving – you’ll leave feeling grateful for the dedicated people who make this sanctuary possible.

And while you're in Pittsboro, you absolutely must stop by Carolina Brewery. Their craft beers are phenomenal, but their food is what keeps me coming back. The fish tacos are to die for, and there's something special about enjoying a locally-brewed beer while supporting a business that's been part of our community fabric for years.

Conquering Heights at Occoneechee Mountain

For those of you who love a good hike with a payoff view…Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area in Hillsborough is the place to go! Whether to clear your head, plan your future, or meditate for a bit. Rising 350 feet above the Eno River, this little mountain might not seem like much, but trust me – the hiking trails wind through diverse ecosystems, and the views from the peaks are absolutely breathtaking.

I love bringing out-of-town clients here because it perfectly captures the natural beauty that makes Central NC so special. There's something about standing at the summit, looking out over the rolling landscape, that makes you understand why people choose to put down roots in this area. Plus, it's the perfect antidote to those long days spent in air-conditioned offices and cars!

Berry Picking: June's Sweetest Tradition

June means one thing in my house – blueberry picking season! I've become a bit of a connoisseur over the years, and I have two absolute favorite spots. Herndon Hill Farms in Durham is a family-run operation where the berries are always perfectly ripe and the owners treat you like family. There's something so satisfying about filling your own baskets while chatting with the farmers about their growing methods.

Hawk Hill Berry Farm in Mebane is another gem – they have multiple varieties of blueberries, which means you can taste the subtle differences and find your personal favorite. I always leave with enough berries for fresh eating, freezing for winter smoothies, and making my a yummy blueberry cobbler recipe. Pro tip: go early in the morning when it's cooler and the berries are at their peak!

Carolina Beach: The Perfect Weekend Escape

Now, let me tell you about my ultimate summer weekend getaway – Carolina Beach. Just a few hours drive from Chapel Hill, this barrier island feels like a different world entirely. The wide, sandy beaches are perfect for everything from early morning jogs to sunset walks, and the water temperature in summer is absolutely perfect for swimming.

What I love most about Carolina Beach is how it manages to feel both relaxed and exciting. You can spend your morning fishing off the pier (the Carolina Beach State Park pier is fantastic), your afternoon browsing the unique shops along the boardwalk, and your evening enjoying fresh seafood at one of the waterfront restaurants. Michaels Seafood Restaurant is fantastic – their clam chowder is legendary, and you can't beat eating steamed crab while watching boats come and go in the harbor.

For the more adventurous, there's kayaking through the salt marshes, where you might spot dolphins, sea turtles, and countless bird species. And if you're visiting in July or August, don't miss the sea turtle nesting season – there are guided tours that let you witness this incredible natural phenomenon.

The Carolina Beach Boardwalk comes alive at night with live music, arcade games, and that classic beach town energy that makes you feel like a kid again. I always stay at least two nights because one day just isn't enough to soak it all in.

Why These Places Matter to Me

As someone who helps families find ‘HOME’ in our beautiful area, I've learned that it's not just about the house – it's about the life you can build here. These hidden gems and weekend adventures are what make our region so special. They're the stories I share with clients who are considering a move here, the activities that help new residents quickly feel at home, and the experiences that remind me every day why I chose to make my career helping others discover the magic of this place I call home.

This summer, I challenge you to check at least one of these spots off your own bucket list. Whether you're a longtime local looking to rediscover your own backyard or someone considering making Central NC your new home, these experiences capture the heart and soul of what makes this region so incredibly special. Trust me – your summer (and your Instagram feed) will thank you!
