If April showers bring May flowers then it goes without saying that a pollinator garden will bring … Pollinators! Creating a pollinator garden is a great way to enjoy beautiful flowers, butterflies, bees, and birds; and an AWESOME give back to your immediate ecosystem!

If starting early in the season you can start with seeds, or potted plants rooted and ready to go. Seeds are the less expensive way to go, but if the idea just took “root’ with you, purchase some read-to-go potted flowers for Spring for immediate impact! Everything I am reading online, and local experts at my favorite plant store ( see below ) say to  check your soil or  purchase nutrient-rich soils and fertilizers to help your garden thrive!

Think ‘Native” when selecting plants for your pollinator garden; they will withstand the climate better and keep native plant populations healthy.

Ready to start a home for the bees and butterflies? Here are some places to check out when thinking about where to buy your pollinator garden plants! Consider supporting one of these fantastic local businesses:

For Garden’s Sake (Masha’s favorite!)

Durham Garden Center

Fifth Season Gardening Co

Piedmont Feed & Garden Store

Down Home Garden Center

Homewood Nursery

Not sure where to start or what flowers and plants to consider? Check out created by Debbie Roos extensive list of Pollinator Plants where over 80% of the plants listed are native to NC!

Looking for inspiration? Take a walk around the Sarah P Duke Gardens! Events are held here throughout the year as well for all levels of garden and nature enthusiasts! Take a look at the schedule of events here.

Interested in seeing some pollinators in action as an educational element to creating your pollinator garden? I highly recommend visiting the Butterfly House at the Museum of Life and Science! A great place to set ideas, learn and enjoy nature at it’s most beautiful!
