As your Chapel Hill realtor and devoted pet parent, I know our four-legged family members make the holidays even more special. But this festive season can bring unexpected hazards into our homes. Let's ensure our pets stay safe while we celebrate in true Carolina style!

Deck the Halls... Carefully! Those twinkling decorations that make our Chapel Hill homes so magical can spell trouble for curious pets. Keep tinsel out of reach (especially from cats – they find it irresistible!), secure your Christmas tree to prevent toppling, and consider battery-operated candles instead of real ones. Pro tip: Many of my clients have successfully placed aluminum foil around the tree base – pets typically dislike the texture and sound!

Holiday Plants: Pretty but Potentially Dangerous While poinsettias get a bad rap, they're only mildly toxic. However, lilies, mistletoe, and holly – all common in Triangle area holiday décor – can be seriously dangerous to pets. If you're unsure about a plant, the excellent vets at Carrboro Plaza Veterinary Clinic or VCA Triangle Tower are always happy to advise.

Festive Foods to Avoid: As much as those puppy dog eyes beg for a taste of your holiday feast, many traditional dishes can harm our pets. Chocolate, xylitol (found in sugar-free treats), grapes, and onions are absolute no-nos. And while you're enjoying those local delicacies from Southern Season or Mediterranean Deli, remember that rich, fatty foods can cause pancreatitis in pets.

Create a Calm Space: The holidays bring many visitors to our Chapel Hill homes, which can overwhelm even the most social pets. Set up a quiet retreat in a spare room or cozy corner with their favorite bed, toys, and fresh water. This is especially important during New Year's Eve when fireworks might echo through our neighborhood.

Emergency Preparedness: Save these numbers in your phone now (trust me, you don't want to be searching in an emergency):

Triangle Veterinary Emergency Hospital

NC State Veterinary Hospital (open 24/7)

ASPCA Animal Poison Control: (888) 426-4435

A little preparation goes a long way in keeping our furry family members safe during the holidays. After all, they make our houses feel like homes – something I'm reminded of every day as I help families find their perfect Chapel Hill haven.

I'm looking forward to seeing you and your four-legged friends around town. Whether at Southern Community Park's dog run or strolling down Franklin Street, our pet-friendly community is one more reason to love calling Chapel Hill home.

Happy Holidays to you and your entire family – paws and all!
